The Cook County Land Bank Authority (CCLBA) desires to select a development team who will purchase and redevelop the Washington Park National Bank Building (the Bank Building) in a manner which enhances the intersection central to the CTA’s 63rd & Cottage Grove Green Line station, generates revenue for the County, and contributes to a vibrant urban community context.

In this spirit, the CCLBA is making available a draft of the Request for Proposals (RFP) so that we can gather as much public input as possible! Please scroll down to download the RFP and post a comment; we would love to hear from you in terms of evaluating the document and making sure that we are incorporating everything that we possibly can in this proposal!  To provide input, please scroll below to post/view all comments (NOTE: if you can’t view/post comments, please click this link):

WOODLAWN CORRIDOR DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

This development of the Washington Park National Bank Building is part of a larger Corridor Development Initiative centered around the CTA Green Line located at 63rd St/Cottage Grove Ave.  Led by the Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC), the CCLBA participated in three public meetings designed to engage the Woodlawn community in proactively planning for this real-world development scenario.  The 1st meeting consisted of existing conditions/goals as well as development opportunities at this intersection.  Meeting #2 focused on a block exercise where community members could visualize design/financing options for not only the National Bank Building, but the neighborhood as a whole. The final meeting focused on a panel of real estate developers who responded to the public input derived from the block exercise.  Those final recommendations were compiled to the Corridor Development Initiative report you can click on above, and provides extensive background on what has occurred in the development of our Request for Proposal (RFP).

I would like the building to be used as a facility for non profit organizations to host training for adults, teens and children.. It can also be used for SRO units for the homeless. and veterans.. Social Service like the Living Room Café but offer showers, clothes washing , clean clothing and personal items for homeless families. This community do not have dog grooming nor printing, faxing and photo development business.

I believe the proposal is too specific and thus makes it overly restrictive on potential developers.. It dictates the land uses and doesn’t leave a lot of room for creativity. Additionally, there is no mention of residential or affordable housing. The building is located in close proximity to a CTA stop and the building could be a mixed-use income residential complex.

Please preserve this building. It could be redeveloped for so many uses, such as condos, apartments, retail, office or social services and shelter for the homeless.

Let’s make it a code academy / accelerator for the South Side. Being right on the El line would afford a rare shot at easy commutes back/forth from the South Side to downtown for investor meetings.

A trade school for kids and adults.

Please preserve this landmark building and return it to mixed use, with retail, offices, and maybe residential. It’s one of the last vestiges of 63rd Street’s heyday, and the building’s architectural charm is irreplaceable.

Temporary housing for the homeless with programs they have to attend, designed tol help them back up and on their feet. There are to many homeless people in this city in need of help. And it sad because this city is to big, with lot of housing for people to be living in big rooms filled with people and having to get up early and leave. Then trying to rush back in time to make sure they can get a place to lay their head. This city is sad, this country is sad. This should not exist in this country. I’m not homeless, have never been homeless, but have you heard some of the horror stories about those place. There’s to much vacant land that the city own for this to be happening. Their should be more housing for the homeless. This city throws away plenty of money building unnecessary thing like bridges to get to the lake and parks when the city has plenty of them. While the people of the city live in hell. It sad to city this city cares nothing about it people, it more focused on how to make the city rate number one among city and building this to attract tourists. You go down town and see homeless people everywhere and they act like it doesn’t exist. As a country we need to wake up and learn how to really care about others people. Instead we look down on them as if we’re perfect. But what we need to remember where they are today you can be tomorrow, know amount of money or education can prevent that.

It would be nice to have a building with multiple business, space for a venue, coffee shop etc

  9. Susan August 29, 2018 at 6:10 am

I would think thst the best use kf this building would be low income housing for families to include CPS classrooms for grades K-6 and 24 hour daycare for working parents who do not have support systems.

Develop the area for a bank or a local clinic, bring back a dental office for WIC

Trade school like Washburn back in the day. Kids needs skills to work with their hands. Not all are cut out for college. If not here somewhere!
